Time permitting, students will have the opportunity to create a background for their chosen animal by carving a separate plate. The course will begin with a brief talk on the history of printmaking and on the linocut method, followed by a demonstration of the materials, equipment and safety procedures. It will wrap up with a brief tutorial on editioning, titling and signing of works as well an informal critique of the day’s results. Students will leave with a minimum of 3 original art works.

Materials cost of $20, please bring on the first day of the workshop.

Maria works from her home studio on Gabriola Island, a visual artist exploring themes of home, heritage, intimacy and distance in painted and printed works on paper. These images draw on personal memory and often combine figures and their spirit animals in imagined contexts of origin.
