Collagraph Printmaking Workshop with Maria Tratt

April 13th, 2024 10am -2pm

$75.00 plus $10 material fee

In this playful approach to printmaking, students will create unique prints by building their own collagraph plates. Students will learn the technique by gluing found materials to thin pieces of cardboard using acrylic medium and then printing them. This method allows for considerable artistic freedom and students will be encouraged to create plates of various shapes and sizes. Students are to bring with them a variety of elements with which to create their collagraphs, including both organic (e.g. leaves and grasses) and in-organic materials (e.g. plastic mesh, string/yarn and fabric). Students will have access to a press on site and will be taught various hand-burnishing methods that they can continue to practice at home. Additionally, students will learn about registration and composition and will receive individual instruction as well as feedback about their work during the various stages of production.

Materials fee is $10, please bring on the first day of the workshop.

Maria works from her home studio on Gabriola Island, a visual artist exploring themes of home, heritage, intimacy and distance in painted and printed works on paper. These images draw on personal memory and often combine figures and their spirit animals in imagined contexts of origin.

Born in Montreal, she has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Vancouver as well as juried exhibitions in Europe. She is a member of the artist-run Dundarave Print Workshop and Gallery and she is trained in all four of the printmaking techniques, working mainly with linocut, etching/aquatint, collagraph, and monotype, often combining two or more of these. Her prints have been published in Wild BC’s An Educator’s Guide to Outdoor Classrooms and she has created watercolour illustrations for the children’s book, Things with Wings.

She holds a diploma in General Fine Arts from John Abbott College (1989), a BA in Journalism and Communications from Concordia University (1996), a BFA from Emily Carr University (2011), and an MFA from Emily Carr University (2017).
