Life is full of new challenges as Vivien Frow discovered while quietly working away in Studio 8 at The Old School House Art Gallery in Qualicum Beach, British Columbia. In popped Ernestine and Sylvia from Victoria. On discovering Vivien had survived 40 years of theatre costuming, the conversations turned to cope with the divas and deadlines.
Obviously, they found it all very entertaining, as Ernestine said, "You should write a book." "Include the landladies too!" said Sylvia.
So here are the first 10 years, beginning 1962, of the amusing, sometimes hilarious, occasionally scary insight into life backstage. Most of the time I had no idea what I was letting myself in for when I accepted contracts at the Bristol Old Vic, Granada TV, the Donovan Maule Theatre in Kenya or the Royal Shakespeare Company. In amidst all this drama was a costume utopia -- the Australian Broadcasting Commission, Channel 2 in Sydney.
