Colour has value and it is beautifully expressed in the medium of soft pastel.
Day 1 - We will work first on white ground with gray tones reminding ourselves of the use of value in composition. We will then explore a second study using a coloured ground which will combine value study with positive and negative space.
Day 2 - The class will plan our subject matter concentrating on composition & colour. Studying the effects of value contrasts on colour, the illusion of transparency & the use of texture.
Supplies
- Bring all the pastels you may have at home. If you don't have a good range of colours then may I suggest a small set of 48 half sticks from "Paul Rubens soft pastels" available on Amazon. This set has a good range of colour, is above average quality and sells for about 35.00 dollars a set.
- sketch book
- pencils
- erasers
- 2 absorbent small cloths ( to wipe hands)
- masking tape
- a drawing board ( approx size 14" X 18" or larger)
- 1 sheet of cream or white paper ( Canson mi-tientes or other pastel papers). Do NOT bring ordinary writing paper or printer paper as it doesn't have the tooth to hold pigment.
- a face mask ( like a covid mask) to avoid breathing in pastel dust
- I will supply the coloured paper and the sanded paper for day 2 & will be happy to share the use of pastels in my own palette for those who may be short on supplies.
- I will also supply the reference material
All classes and workshops are non-refundable. Cancellations made 7 days or more in advance of the workshop or class date will receive 100% credit. 6 days before class and no credit will be issued.
