Bio
I was born in Belleville, Ontario 1948 and spent my childhood in Caracas, Los Angeles and Zurich - moving to Vancouver in 1960.
I graduated from the Vancouver School of Art (now Emily Carr University) with a Fine Arts Diploma in 1969. My instructors included Takao Tanabe, Reg Holmes, Fred Peter and Don Jarvis.
I played drums and sang in various Vancouver based bands including My Indole Ring, Uncle Slug and Cement City Cowboys.
In 1974 I began work as a graphic designer and exhibition assistant at the Vancouver Art Gallery. As my design career developed I worked as an Art Director for Maclean’s, Vancouver, and Western Living Magazine. In 1986 I formed my own design company Chris Dahl Creative and clients included UBC, SFU, Vancouver Canucks and The Vancouver Symphony.
My paintings, prints and photographs have been exhibited at the Vancouver Art Gallery, the National Gallery of Canada, National Film Board Gallery and Harrison Galleries (Vancouver).
About 10 years ago – wanting to try something new – I started working with clay and fell in love with the fun of making objects – art that is not so precious and can actually be used. Recently I also moved from oil on canvas to stylus and tablet for my paintings and I enjoy the spontaneity of this new medium. I will be exhibiting some of these new pieces in April 2027 at TOSH.
I’ve been a resident of Qualicum Beach since 1997 and currently spend my time making art and music in my home studio and enjoying the charms of our small town.
